The Pebble Mine project is a proposal to build a giant open pit gold/copper mine in Southwest Alaska. It would be the largest open pit mine in North America. The site is located north of Lake Iliamna, at the headwaters of two watersheds reaching Bristol Bay - home of some of the largest salmon runs in the world.
