Mission & Methods

Beyond Spec is dedicated to exploring novel outdoor equipment solutions. We do not have a formalized testing process. We do, however, often use our equipment beyond advertised usage and/or design specifications. We focus our profiles on equipment that is:

Cheap.
Unconventional.
Has proven extremely useful.
Has exceeded its stated limits or usage.
Has spectacularly (and often humorously) failed.

We spend our own money on our equipment. Instead of setting out to make a equipment fail, our observations are the result of either trying to make equipment succeed, or, well… goofing around. As such, we do not have the means to test the full range of available equipment. We review what we have.

BEYOND SPEC is not about suffering!
Yes, we do some wierd things, but we're trying to find ways to do more with less without torturing ourselves.
